Safer P2P buying on OKX: merchant checks, payment proof and when to open an appeal
If the OKX P2P section shows offers for your currency, here is how to vet a merchant, pay only through the order screen's details, keep proof of payment and use the appeal process when something goes wrong.
Multiple exchanges | Nigeria | NGN | fees, access and account safety
Peer-to-peer trading lets you buy crypto from another person who receives your local payment while the platform holds their crypto in escrow. On OKX, the P2P section shows which currencies and payment methods are offered for your account at that moment; what appears can change, so treat your own screen as the reference. When it works, P2P is simple. When it fails, the cause is almost always the same: payment made outside the order, missing proof, or a buyer pressured into cancelling. The steps below are about avoiding all three.
Vet the merchant before you click Buy
On each offer, open the merchant profile. Look at the number of completed orders, completion rate and average release time, and whether the profile shows any verification badge. Read the merchant's terms text, which sometimes adds conditions such as specific banks. Skip offers whose price is far better than the rest; unusually good prices often come with unusual problems.
Pay exactly as the order screen says
After placing the order, the screen shows the payment details and a countdown. Pay the exact amount to the exact account shown, from a bank account in your own verified name. Do not add crypto words in the transfer narration unless the order tells you to. Never move to WhatsApp or Telegram to receive different payment details; use only the in-order chat, which OKX can review in a dispute.
Mark as paid only after you have paid
Once your transfer is complete, tap the button to confirm payment and upload a screenshot or receipt showing date, amount, recipient name and reference. Do not cancel the order after paying, even if the merchant asks you to; cancelling can release the escrow back to them. Wait for the merchant to release the crypto, which then appears in your funding account.
When to appeal
If the merchant does not release within the time shown, or claims not to have received funds that your bank shows as sent, open an appeal from the order page. Provide the receipt and bank statement entry. Keep calm and reply only through the order chat. The P2P help articles in the OKX help center explain the appeal steps and timelines that currently apply.
