Referral offers in Nigerian Telegram groups: what is real and what is a trap
Telegram and WhatsApp groups in Nigeria are full of exchange referral offers. How to tell an ordinary Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget referral from a scheme that uses the referral as bait.
Multiple exchanges | Nigeria | NGN | fees, access and account safety
Join any crypto group in Nigeria and you will see referral codes within minutes. Some come from regular users who earn a small share of fees when someone signs up through their link. Others are attached to something else: an account manager, a trading signal subscription, a promise of daily returns. The referral itself is harmless. The extra package around it is where people lose money. Knowing the difference takes one simple rule and a look at the exchange's own page.
The simple rule
A real referral only changes who gets credit for inviting you. You sign up yourself, you keep your login to yourself, and you deposit into your own account. If an offer requires you to give someone else your password, let them trade for you, send money to their wallet first or pay for access to a group, it is not a referral. It is a separate scheme using a referral link as decoration, and those schemes often end with the organiser disappearing.
Read the programme on the exchange
Each exchange describes its referral or invitation programme on its own website and app. Open that page from the app you installed from the official store and read who qualifies, what tasks are involved and when rewards expire. Rewards change often, and some regions are excluded. If a group post promises a bonus the exchange page does not mention, treat the post as unreliable, no matter how many members the group has.
Watch for pressure and secrecy
Schemes rely on urgency and exclusivity: limited slots, a countdown, a private group you must join today. They also discourage questions and ask you to keep the opportunity quiet. A real referral has no deadline that matters to you and needs no secrecy. If someone pushes you to deposit quickly or to recruit friends to unlock your own withdrawal, step back. Legitimate exchanges never require recruiting others before you can withdraw.
Protect the account you just opened
Whichever link you use, secure the new account before depositing. Turn on an authenticator app or a passkey, set an anti-phishing code and enable withdrawal whitelisting. Do not share verification codes with anyone who messages you afterwards claiming to help with your reward. If you are unsure whether a reward was credited, ask the exchange support from inside the app rather than the person who sent the link.
Risk boundary: Nigeria Crypto Guide
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Accept a referral only if you sign up, log in and deposit entirely by yourself.
- Read the referral programme on the exchange's own page before believing a group post.
- Walk away from offers with countdowns, secrecy or recruitment requirements.
- Secure the new account with 2FA, anti-phishing code and whitelisting before depositing.
